Angus Ni Speaks at 2026 NYU Legal Careers Panel

Professional panels bring lawyers together to discuss career paths or particular aspects of legal practice. At career events, students and newer attorneys can ask how practitioners entered their fields and what different roles involve. Other panels address specialized subjects, such as evidence gathering in disputes involving more than one country.

Angus Ni is a New York-based attorney and co-founder of Morrow Ni LLP, which operates as Moni Law. His work spans commercial and securities litigation, including matters involving Chinese clients. Angus Ni’s participation in the NYU panel placed that experience alongside the perspectives of lawyers in other practice areas.

Career Planning and China-Related Legal Work at NYU

The Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY) is a professional organization supporting Asian American lawyers through professional development, advocacy and community programs. On September 27, 2026, its Asia Practice Committee co-hosted a legal careers panel with the NYU Chinese Law Students Association and the Chinese American Lawyers Forum. The event took place at Lipton Hall at NYU School of Law, which offers J.D. and LL.M. programs.

AABANY reported more than 100 attendees, including law students, LL.M. candidates, recent graduates and practicing attorneys. Angus Ni joined Lian Duan, general counsel at China Merchants Bank’s New York branch; Jonathan Zhou, a partner at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP; Simona Xu, a senior litigation associate at Cooley LLP; and Hardy Zhou, a tax associate at Cooley and co-chair of AABANY’s Asia Practice Committee.

The panel discussed choosing practice areas, moving from law school into employment, mentorship and professional development. The speakers also addressed China-related legal work and the U.S. career prospects of internationally trained lawyers and LL.M. graduates.

Morrow Ni LLP’s Angus Ni attorney profile outlines his earlier litigation positions before he co-founded the firm. His career was one of the paths discussed alongside those of lawyers working in transactions, tax and corporate legal departments. The audience asked questions after the panel, and a networking reception followed.

Angus Ni’s Earlier Cross-Border Discovery Panel in Seattle

In May 2026, Angus Ni co-hosted a panel at the Chinese American Lawyers Forum’s annual conference in Seattle. The session, titled “Tricks of the Trade: Avoiding Landmines In International Multi-Lingual Discovery,” also featured Hao Tan of Arch & Lake LLP and Amiad Kushner of Seiden Law LLP. Its topic was discovery in disputes involving several jurisdictions and languages.

In U.S. civil litigation, discovery allows parties to request relevant documents and information under applicable procedural rules. Cross-border disputes may involve contracts, correspondence and corporate records stored overseas or written in different languages. Parties may therefore need to address translation and the rules governing requests for material held abroad.

Angus Ni’s role as host at the Seattle conference concerned a subject reflected in his earlier practice. At Bernstein Litowitz Berger & Grossmann LLP, he prosecuted securities class actions for hedge fund and pension fund investors, including cases involving domestic and international discovery. At Debevoise & Plimpton LLP, his work included corporate investigations spanning several countries.

At Debevoise, he also participated in international arbitrations before International Chamber of Commerce and International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes tribunals. Those assignments involved commercial and investment disputes, adding experience with arbitration proceedings to his work on investigations and securities cases.

Angus Ni’s Litigation and Pro Bono Experience

One of Angus Ni’s later defense matters involved an arbitration administered by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and brought by J.P. Morgan Securities LLC against a customer following a short sale of shares in an initial public offering. J.P. Morgan sought more than $6.4 million on fraud and breach-of-contract claims. Angus Ni led the Morrow Ni LLP defense team at a six-day evidentiary hearing.

The defense questioned J.P. Morgan’s witnesses about when the securities firm could have closed the short position. Testimony identified $279,250 as the cost of an earlier Regulation SHO-compliant close-out, before a later share-price increase. The panel rejected the fraud claims and limited contractual damages to $279,250, with each side bearing its own fees. It attributed the additional claimed losses to J.P. Morgan’s decisions about the timing of the close-out.

Angus Ni also worked pro bono in the 2023 federal criminal defense of Zhu Hailong, who faced a charge of conspiracy to commit bank fraud in the Eastern District of Virginia. His trial work included cross-examining prosecution witnesses, among them an interrogating agent. At the close of the government’s case, the judge entered a judgment of acquittal under Rule 29 because the evidence was insufficient to sustain a conviction. The ruling came before jury deliberations.

Other matters in Angus Ni’s practice include defending China-based businesses listed on U.S. exchanges. He has represented a Chinese mobile phone manufacturer in a securities class action in New York federal court and a Chinese agricultural supplies manufacturer in a shareholder lawsuit in Nevada. Morrow Ni LLP has also handled recognition and enforcement proceedings involving decisions from courts in China and Hong Kong and awards issued by Chinese arbitration institutions. Those matters have reached courts in California, Washington and New York.
